LiveOps Foundation Helps Empower Foster Youth for a Better Tomorrow
Awards 2010 Foundation Grant to the Youth Education Scholars Program, Helping to Improve Educational Opportunities for Area Foster Youth
Santa Clara, Calif. — April 21, 2010 — Today, LiveOps presented its spring 2010 Foundation grant to the Youth Education Scholars Program (YES), a program hosted by the Silicon Valley Children’s Fund (SVCF) which aims to improve educational outcomes and access to education for foster youth in the Silicon Valley and beyond.
"LiveOps is honored to award our first Foundation grant of 2010 to the Youth Education Scholars Program," said Maynard Webb, chairman and CEO, LiveOps. "We built the LiveOps Foundation with the goal of reducing barriers in the community and providing resources and services that support individuals in their quest for meaningful work. The YES program's educational services — which have been created specifically for foster youth who are attempting to overcome difficult circumstances — are perfectly aligned with this goal. YES offers our 'workers of tomorrow' with the educational tools and resources they need to become successful, self-sustaining adults and equal contributors in America’s workforce."
"With more than 63% of foster youth without a job within 2-4 years of their emancipation, education plays an increasingly vital role in ensuring foster youths' successful transition into the world of work," said Elise Cutini, Executive Director of the Silicon Valley Children’s Fund. "LiveOps' offering of flexible and meaningful work for individuals complements our vision of seeing each and every foster youth reach their full potential in life. Our educational services nurture and instill confidence in the individuals who will eventually lead tomorrow’s workforce."
The Silicon Valley Children’s Fund (SVCF) was established in 1987 to raise the funds necessary to build a new Children’s Shelter for Santa Clara county's abused, neglected, and abandoned youth. By 1995, the Fund raised $14 million and began building a new home-like shelter for youths. Following the shelter's construction, the SVCF undertook the development of model educational programs and support services that would help foster youth overcome their difficult circumstances to achieve their dreams for the future. Today, the SVCF's core educational program — the Youth Education Scholars Program — focuses on three major areas for the educational success of foster children: improving literacy and basic academic skills, engaging new high school students to develop a solid foundation for future academic endeavors, and providing financial aid and support services for higher education.
The Youth Education Scholars Program empowers foster youth with the educational tools necessary for their successful transition into adulthood, helping to significantly raise the percentage of emancipated foster youth who successfully complete post-secondary education by providing scholarship support for college and vocational training, educational mentoring, academic support programs, life skills training, and information and referral to campus-based resources. Statewide, 46% of foster youth drop out of high school before obtaining their diplomas. Today however, over 200 YES scholars have received scholarships to attend college.
